The provincial government of South Cotabato is giving waste management a big boost by staging a recyclable waste fair to promote materials recovery and recycling to help address the waste problem.
The fair, held at the Fitmart Mall in Koronadal, South Cotabato last December 6, was aimed at promoting the benefits of recycling and encourage more participation by industrial waste generators, business establishments, and local government units (LGUs) and national government agencies in waste recycling. The day-long event, participated in by eight junkshops, which set up buying stations at the mall’s parking lot, collected more than 26,000 kilos of recyclable materials valued at over P12,000.
The South Cotabato provincial LGU got support from the USAID-funded Philippine Environmental Governance Project (EcoGov), which helped organize the event. The province was also supported by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Environmental Management Bureau-Region XII, and business groups in South Cotabato.
DENR Assistant Secretary for LGU Affairs and officer-in-charge of the National Solid Waste Management Commission graced the event.
